Generated Selves (2025) explores moments of self-recognition through conversations with AI agents generated from personal social media data. The project investigates how individuals perceive and understand themselves when reflected through data-trained intelligence. Each generated self is constructed through the analysis of a participant’s Instagram data, from which the AI infers multiple layers of identity, including visual, social, and conceptual selves, as well as recurring interests and patterns of expression. Beyond these explicit traits, the generated selves also speculate on bias, exaggeration, and latent desires embedded in the data—elements that are often unintentional or unacknowledged by the original self. Through dialogue, the generated self reflects not only how the participant has chosen to present themselves, but also how their data suggests unrecognised intentions and tendencies. To date, eighteen generated selves have been created and have entered into conversations with their original selves, producing moments of alignment, tension, and unexpected empathy. While the project initially focused on one-to-one encounters between the original self and its generated counterpart, its ongoing development extends toward interactions among the generated selves themselves. By allowing these data-derived identities to converse, coexist, and “live” within a shared environment, Generated Selves shifts its inquiry from individual self-reflection to collective, algorithmic subjectivity, questioning how identity is formed and perceived in an AI-mediated world. 〈생성된 자아들 (2025)〉은 개인의 소셜 미디어(인스타그램) 데이터로부터 생성된 나의 AI 에이전트와 대화를 통해 ‘나’를 인식하는 순간들을 탐구하는 프로젝트이다. 본 프로젝트는 데이터로 학습된 지능을 통해 반추된 ‘나’를 마주할 때 개인은 자신을 어떻게 인식하고 이해하게 되는지를 질문한다. 각 생성된 자아는 참여자의 인스타그램 데이터를 분석해 구성되며, AI는 이를 바탕으로 시각적 자아, 사회적 자아, 개념적 자아를 포함한 여러 층위의 정체성과 반복적으로 드러나는 관심사, 표현의 패턴을 추론한다. 이러한 명시적 특성들뿐 아니라, 생성된 자아는 데이터 속에 내포된 편향성, 과장성, 그리고 원자아가 의식하지 못했거나 의도하지 않았던 잠재된 욕망까지도 추론의 대상으로 삼는다. 대화를 통해 생성된 자아는 참여자가 스스로 선택해 드러낸 모습뿐 아니라, 데이터가 암시하는 인식되지 않은 의도와 성향을 반영한다. 현재까지 총 열여덟 개의 생성된 자아가 만들어졌으며, 이들은 각자의 원자아와 대화를 나누며 공감, 긴장, 그리고 예기치 않은 감정적 교차의 순간들을 만들어왔다. 초기에는 원자아와 생성된 자아 간의 일대일 만남에 초점을 두었으나, 프로젝트는 점차 생성된 자아들 간의 상호작용으로 확장되고 있다. 데이터로부터 파생된 자아들이 하나의 공유된 환경 안에서 대화하고 공존하며 ‘살아가도록’ 함으로써, 〈생성된 자아들〉은 개인적 자기성찰을 넘어 집단적·알고리즘적 주체성으로 질문의 범위를 확장하며, 인공지능이 매개하는 세계 속에서 정체성이 어떻게 형성되고 인식되는지를 탐구하는것이 이 프로젝트의 방향성이다.
